Best Practices for Route Transfer
First of all, it’s important to understand that you cannot transfer a route from one system to another like a photo that looks the same no matter where you view it. This is due to the way route data is represented. Every navigation system calculates routes individually using its own algorithms, settings, and maps/ road data.
So, when transferring a route from Kurviger to another system, like Garmin or TomTom, the resulting route may differ. Even if you stay within the Kurviger universe, using different route settings or calculating the same route at a later time, the resulting route can be different - over time, roads may close due to construction, new roads may be built, and the overall road network changes.
If you want to keep a route as close as possible to your originally planned version, here are some best practices to follow.
Check Your Route
Before exporting a route, you should check it and correct any inaccuracies.
- Use the feature
Snap all waypoints to the closest street
in the⁝
menu to make sure they lie on the actual road and avoid your navigation system choosing the wrong road. - Check the exact position of each waypoint. Waypoints are often accidentally placed on intersections, turns, roundabouts, or side roads instead of the intended road. This can lead to unexpected detours during navigation. Often, Kurviger will show a yellow warning triangle below your waypoint list, when a waypoint is too close to an intersection or creates U-turns.
- Check which roads Kurviger uses for your route. As a Kurviger Tourer or Tourer+, you can view road details like closures or unpaved roads. You can add shaping points to refine your route then.
- Show turn instructions on the map to check where Kurviger is turning. This helps identify critical points along the route.
Stabilize Your Route
Before you export a route to another navigation system, you should stabilize it by adding more shaping points along your route. This helps prevent deviations from your originally planned route, as your navigation system will try to follow these points. Add as many as necessary but as few as possible, and place them strategically to guide the route.
The Kurviger export offers to place additional shaping points automatically. This works well for many situations, but the best results are still achieved manually.
This is how to strategically set shaping points manually:
- Save your planned route to the Kurviger Cloud.
- Load it as a Map overlay.
- The overlay will appear as a dashed line on top of your current route. This allows you to compare your current route with the original saved version.
- To check if you have set a sufficient number of shaping points, change the
Curvature
setting. If your route changes and no longer matches the overlay, add shaping points until it closely aligns with the original route.
Tip: Using the Fastest
route with no Avoidances
and still getting the same route as before is usually enough to ensure that most navigation systems will follow your planned route.
Your Navigation System/Device
Now you can transfer your route to your navigation system!
When you load your route, some navigation systems offer the option to display the track as an overlay. This allows you to easily spot any differences between your planned route and what the device calculates. If this feature isn't available, you can also compare the distance of the Kurviger route with the one shown by your navigation system. Significant differences may indicate a potential issue - in such cases, we recommend checking the route more closely.
