Route Transfer to Garmin

Important to understand: You can't simply transfer a route from one system to another like a photo that looks the same everywhere. This is because of how route data is structured. Since each navigation system calculates routes using its own algorithms, settings, and map data, there may be discrepancies.

The Kurviger export helps you export your route in a way that it matches your planned Kurviger route as closely as possible on your Garmin device.
To do this, select your navigation device in the Kurviger export and the appropriate format and recommended settings will be suggested automatically. Therefore, try this first to see if you get a good result on your Garmin device.
Find out more about Kurviger route export here.

If there are still discrepancies, you can vary the settings for track and route.
What is the difference between track and route?

  • Export only the track
  • Export only the route (with additional waypoints!)
  • Export track and route (if your navigation device can import both together)

➜ Import each variant one after the other onto your navigation device and check the differences.
For more help, we have summarized some export best practices here.

Another option for converting a Kurviger route for Garmin is offered by gpxshaping.de (German and English).

Once you have successfully exported your route from Kurviger, you will need to import it to your Garmin navigation device. See also the German instructions from Volker Koch.

  1. Connect your navigation device to your planning device (PC/Android) using a USB cable or insert the SD card from your navigation device into your planning device. Here you will find instructions on how to connect Android devices via USB cable.
  2. Copy the GPX file to Garmin\GPX.
  3. Disconnect the USB connection and start your navigation device.
  4. To import a route: Go to AppsTrip Planner and select Import and the desired route. You can then start navigation.
  5. To import a track: Go to AppsTracks and select the desired track and then Import. You can also choose to display the track on the main map.

For some Garmin devices (e.g., Garmin XT2), you can also import the GPX file directly via the Tread app on your smartphone. This is particularly useful if you want to plan or share your route while on the go.

After you have installed the Garmin Tread app on your smartphone and paired it with your Garmin device:

  1. In the Tread app: Tap the ☰ menu in the upper left corner ➜ Saved ➜ the ⁝ menu in the upper right corner ➜ Import data. (You can also tap directly on the desired GPX file in your smartphone's file browser and select the Garmin Tread app from the list of available apps when you open it.)
  2. Then choose whether you want to import the file into a Collection or Uncategorized (without assigning it to a collection).
  3. After importing, you will find the route in the Saved section.

One of the safest but also most time-consuming ways is to first load your Kurviger route into Garmin Basecamp – if you are familiar with Basecamp! Export the track and route as a GPX file from Kurviger and import it into Basecamp. This allows you to see the exact route (track) as well as your Garmin-connected waypoints (route) superimposed on top of each other, so you can adjust the route until it matches the track.
