Importing a GPX Track into Kurviger
Import route, route import, GPX, import GPX track into Kurviger
A GPX track is a recorded log of a route, where a GPX tracker saves the current position every X seconds. Tracks can also be artificially generated (e.g., by exporting a route from Kurviger) to create an exact replica of a path. However, tracks only contain a list of coordinates. Often, minor errors or deviations can occur in tracks, usually caused by inaccurate GPS measurements during recording or due to different map materials used in their creation. This makes it quite challenging to convert a track back into a plannable route.
How to Import a GPX Track into Kurviger?
Here is a compact guide on how to import a GPX track into the Kurviger website. The process is very similar in the app.
Importing a GPX Track:
- Open the Kurviger website or app.
- Click on the
Import Button
(Website: Navigation bar → Import, App: Main menu (click on Kurviger icon) → Import) and select your GPX track. - The GPX track will be displayed on the Kurviger map.
Setting Waypoints:
- Kurviger automatically places waypoints along the track, but you can adjust the number of waypoints if needed. A good rule of thumb: about 10 waypoints per 100 km.
- Fewer waypoints minimize the risk of small errors, such as incorrectly placed points that may affect routing. For GPX imports, the rule is: as few as possible, as many as necessary.
- You can manually add more waypoints if the track does not exactly follow the route.
Adjusting Route Options:
- Check if the automatically calculated route (blue line) matches the GPX track (red line).
- If the route differs, adjust the route options, such as switching from “extra curvy” to “fastest route” for sections that include highways.
Adding Additional Waypoints:
- If the route does not match the GPX track, manually add additional waypoints.
- Website:
Right-click on the map
→“Set as intermediate destination.”
- App:
Long press on the map
→“Set as intermediate destination.”
- Check the differences between the planned route and the track, and add waypoints at the appropriate locations to better align the route with the track.
Adjusting Waypoint Order for Round Trips:
- For round trips, the order of waypoints might get mixed up.
- Website: Drag and drop waypoints in the list on the left to rearrange them in the correct order.
- App: Go to Menu → Route → Waypoints and rearrange them using the arrows.
Aligning Waypoints to Roads:
- To avoid routing problems, click on the
“Snap waypoints to road”
button (in the 3-dot menu). This ensures that all waypoints are placed directly on the road, improving navigation accuracy.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your imported route closely follows the GPX track and is optimized for navigation, reducing potential routing issues when importing the route into a GPS device.
