User Interface (UI) & Terms

Terms related to route planning and navigation can be confusing, especially when different providers use different names for the same things.
This page therefore contains all the key terms and definitions used in Kurviger.

Our aim is to promote understanding when reading the Knowledge Base and using Kurviger, as well as to facilitate communication in the forum.
If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us at any time in the Kurviger Forum!

Note:

  • The focus here is on basic concepts and terms - please refer to the relevant topic articles for detailed instructions.
  • The images apply to both the app and the website, as the user interface is almost identical.

Here you will find the most important elements for working with Kurviger.

Here you can find more detailed information on how to use the Kurviger website or the Kurviger app.

Website

App

Route planning is the main view of Kurviger. It is the first thing you see when you open Kurviger in your web browser or app. In this mode, you can easily plan your perfect motorcycle route.

Simply enter your start, destination, and waypoints in the Waypoint List on the left, select your preference in the Curvature setting, and Kurviger will calculate a suitable route for you. This will then be displayed as a line on the Map.

You can zoom in and out of the map using the + and - buttons or by scrolling with the mouse. The ⁝ menu offers additional options for editing your route, such as import and export.

More information about these and other features can be found in our getting started guides for the app and website.

You can start follow mode in the app using the navigation arrow if you don't have a route (or subscription). In this mode, the map continuously moves according to your position so that your position and direction of movement are always visible. You can use Follow mode to explore an area without a route and therefore without turn-by-turn directions, or to follow a track while still being able to see upcoming turns and possible junctions.

Kurviger navigation guides you along your planned route with visual and voice-guided turn-by-turn directions. If you miss a turn, Kurviger automatically recalculates a new route to get you back on track smoothly. In navigation mode, you can also view additional information such as your current speed, altitude, estimated arrival time, or distance to the next waypoint.

Navigation simulation: In the Kurviger app, you can test a route in advance by loading it, starting navigation, and selecting simulate navigation. Learn more about this here.

More info about these and other features can be found in our getting started guides for the app and website.

Dark mode: Dark mode is automatically activated at sunset and deactivated at sunrise. It adjusts the map display with dark colors to prevent glare when driving at night and improve visibility while driving.

Start: This is where your route begins.

Via point: A waypoint you definitely want to visit (e.g. biker meeting point, lunch stop, hotel).

  • Sometimes abbreviated as “VP”
  • Is displayed visually during navigation and announced by voice output
  • Is not automatically skipped when recalculating (but can be skipped manually)

Shaping point: A waypoint that influences the course of your route and thus determines where your route should go (without marking a specific location).

  • Sometimes abbreviated as “SP”
  • Is NOT displayed visually or announced by voice output during navigation
  • Can be automatically skipped when recalculating or skipping a section of the route if it makes sense (e.g. if you have skipped an SP and then return to the route)

End: This is where your route ends.

Notes on waypoints

  • Numbering: Waypoints and shaping points are numbered consecutively (starting with 1). The start and destination are marked as such and are not numbered.
  • Placement: If possible, do not place waypoints at intersections, roundabouts, or turns to avoid problems with route calculation and navigation.
  • For round trips: We recommend placing at least one intermediate destination about halfway along the route so that no sections of the route are skipped.
  • Flexibility: Waypoints do not have to be exactly on the road when planning with Kurviger—they can be set on buildings or parking lots, for example. But be careful: Waypoints far away from the road can lead to confusing navigation announcements. Transferring a route to other systems can cause problems.

Fastest
Guides your route so that you reach your destination as quickly as possible. Accordingly, highways may also be included in the route.

Fast and curvy
Guides your route via motorways and dual carriageways, but also takes twisty sections into account as long as they do not cause a significant detour.

Curvy
Guides your route along beautiful twisty roads and passes and ensures a good balance between driving pleasure and detour.

Extra curvy
Guides your route similarly to “Curvy,” but prefers even more twisty roads and avoids cities even more. Often guides you along small country roads with little traffic, even if this results in longer detours.

Beeline

  • Draws a straight line as the direct connection between two waypoints, without regard to roads, terrain, or other obstacles that may lie between them. (Available with Tourer and Tourer+ subscription.)

All curvy route modes

  • Shows you all three curvatures at once. (Available with Tourer and Tourer+ subscription.)

Using the same road twice: Avoids routes that use the same road more than once.
Toll roads: Avoids roads where tolls are charged.
Ferries: Avoids ferry crossings (= potential waiting times and/or fees).
Motorways: Avoids motorways and dual carriageways.
Main roads: Avoids main roads (= potential traffic jams).
Narrow roads: Avoids smallest roads. Particularly useful in rural or hard-to-reach areas to avoid difficulties in navigating or driving.
Unpaved roads: Avoids unpaved or gravel roads to reduce the risk in bad weather or on rough terrain.

Note: Too many avoidance options severely limit the route calculation options and can lead to undesirable routes and long detours.

Therefore, be sure to only select the avoidance options that are really necessary and avoid selecting conflicting settings at the same time (such as “smallest roads” and “main roads”).

With Tourer or Tourer+ you can also customize the strength of the avoidances.

You can change the map style by clicking on the map style button on the map (website: top left, app: bottom right) and then selecting the map style you want for the planning view. Please note: You cannot change the map style for navigation, as this would not work with offline maps.

We refer to interesting places on the map as POIs. Kurviger offers many interesting POIs for your tour, which you can display on the map as white circles with blue symbols. Find out more here.

A map overlay is a visual representation of additional information that is superimposed on the existing map - this can be waypoints, tracks, or routes. Route and track overlays are displayed as dashed lines on the map. Learn more about map overlays here.

The currently loaded route is displayed as a solid blue line on the map.

Potentially closed roads are displayed on the map as red sections on your route and with a red no-entry icon for time- or vehicle-dependent restrictions (e.g., construction sites, weekend driving bans). To see more details about the closure, you can click on the icon.

The turn instructions (and waypoint instructions) that you normally receive during navigation can be displayed as yellow dots on your route in the ⁝ menu under show turn instructions.
