Kurviger Website: Start Guide

Thank you for choosing Kurviger! We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Here is a small guide to help you get started using the Kurviger website. If you have any questions, take a look at our FAQ section or ask in our forum.

Website Overview

The most important actions for planning your route can be found in the menu. This is located in the top right of the sidebar. Here you can, for example, reverse, save or delete a route. But you can also generate a round trip or export or import a route.

You can access various functions via the navigation bar at the top of the screen: Search, Cloud and Plan. By clicking on Profile, you can also view and manage all the information about your Kurviger account. By clicking on the menu in the upper left corner, you can access further content related to Kurviger (e.g. settings, merch, documentation, blog, and much more).

Planning Your First Route

Planning a route is the core functionality of Kurviger. It is very easy to plot a route on the website. A route consists of two or more waypoints. The Kurviger algorithm tries to connect the waypoints with an enjoyable route. Waypoints can be used to mark stops (via point) or can be used change where the route goes (shaping point).

There are various ways to set a waypoint and to work with your route.

  • You can use the sidebar on the left: In the sidebar, you find input fields (Start and End). You can use these to search for places (e.g. London) or to enter a coordinate ((e.g., 51.541274,-0.277684 for the famous Ace Cafe in London). By clicking on the + between the two fields, you can add further destinations, known as via points. You can change the order of the points using drag and drop.
  • You can use the map: Right-click on the map and use one of the “Set as” options, e.g. Set as Start. If you prefer to use the left mouse button, you can either hold down the Shift key and click with the left mouse button or activate the option for the left mouse button in the route settings (you will find this in the menu).

  • You can also use the Search function to search for a specific location or coordinates and add it to your route.

  • You can also click on the POIs displayed on the map and add them to your route as waypoints using the Add to route button, as explained below.

You can customize the names of your waypoints. To do so, click on the corresponding waypoint in the sidebar or on the map and then in the input field that says Waypoint name. Now you can choose any name you like, but you can also edit or delete it at any time.

By default Kurviger will provide you with a route that is curvy and fun to ride, but everyone has a different taste and depending on the location, different parameters can be more suitable. You can set the curvature of your route using the Curvature button above the waypoint list. To do this, simply select the desired curvature. You can find more information about the curvature here.

Note that you can set the curvature per route segment as a .

By default Kurviger will provide you with a route that avoids roads that are less fun to ride with a motorcycle. To explicitly avoid certain road types according to your preferences, you can further refine your route with avoidances.

You can set the avoidances for your route using the Avoidances button above the waypoint list. To do this, simply select the avoidances you want. To individually set the strength of the avoidances, you can click on the number and then adjust the avoidance strength using the slider. You can find more information about avoidances here.

Note that you can set the avoidance strenght as a .

Kurviger offers you some helpful information about your planned route: Below the waypoint list, you can see the distance, travel time, elevation and warnings for your route.

In addition, you can analyze your route even more precisely using the elevation diagram, for example, to see the elevation at a specific point or to keep an eye on closed roads and toll roads.
Simply click on the “Diagram” button in the bottom right corner of the map and move your mouse over the diagram to get detailed information for the corresponding point on the route. Use the drop-down menu to switch between Elevation, Speed limit, Route information and Route profile for segemnt.

Note that some information is only available to users.

Open the menu and click on Generate round trip. If you haven't already beforehand, set a starting point. Then customize all the settings (direction, distance, curvature and avoidances) according to your wishes and click on Generate round trip. Your round trip has now been generated! You don't like the round trip? By repeatedly clicking on the “Generate round trip” button, you can always get new round trips suggested.

Note that you can plan longer round trips with .

Kurviger offers many interesting POIs for your tour, including both editorial content and data from OSM:

  • Biker friendly accommodation (Editorial)
  • Motorcycle tour tips (Editorial)
  • Motorcycle meeting points / biker cafes (Editorial)
  • Fuel stations (OSM)
  • Mountain passes (Editorial + OSM)
  • Technical Museums (Editorial)
  • Mechanics and Motorcycle Workshops (OSM)
  • Tourist attractions and interesting places to stop (Editorial + OSM)
  • Lookout points (OSM)

You can recognize POIs on the map by their white circles with blue icons. Simply click on an icon to learn more about the POI.

In the POI info window, you can click on Add to route to easily include this POI in your tour.

If you know of a POI that is missing, please let us know: Submit a missing POI.

Manage Routes

To save your route, click the green Save button to the right of the route name. Then, set a name and location and click Save route to save your route in the cloud.

If you are working on a route that is already stored in the cloud, you can select the Save route as option from the menu. This allows you to either overwrite the existing route with your changes or create a new route under a different name. Further information about the Kurviger Cloud can be found here.

To load a saved route from the Kurviger cloud, click on the Cloud area in the navigation bar. You are now in the Routes tab (there is also a Favorites tab, because you can also save these in the Kurviger cloud). Click on the desired folder and select your route. Clicking on Load route displays the route on the map so you can edit it further. Further information about the Kurviger Cloud can be found here.

To export your route, click on the menu in the sidebar and select Export. Set all the export settings that are relevant to you and click on the Export button to export your route.

To import your route, you have to click on the menu in the sidebar and select Import. You can enter a Kurviger link or tour code or upload a file (e.g. .gpx, .kurviger, .itn, .mps). Specify all the import settings that are relevant for you in the import area and click on the Import route button to import your route.

Kurviger can load routes in many formats. On the website, click on Import, there you can select the route you want to import.

The overlay only displays the data, but does not use it for routing. This can be useful to load a couple of routes to help you plan a route. Another use case could be to load data from third parties like Passknacker to include certain POIs.

When you import a route for the routing, Kurviger will try to create a route based on your input, it is worth to try to change the automatic mode, if the result is not what you are looking for.

Also see our documentation here:

To transfer a route, you need to click on Export. For the Kurviger app, you can choose the .kurviger file. If you know what type of file your navi can read, you can select that and then click on Export.

As a Kurviger Tourer you can export the name of waypoints and the shaping points, just select the option you like.

When your navi only supports a format based on waypoints (no tracks), it can help to generate additional waypoints that are added to the route so your navi can follow the planned route more easily.
